چکیده

[1] Model simulations of circulation and melting beneath Fimbulisen, Antarctica, obtained using an isopycnic coordinate ocean model, are presented. Model results compare well with available observations of currents and hydrography in the open ocean to the north of Fimbulisen and suggest that Warm Deep Water exists above the level of a sub-ice-shelf bedrock sill, the principal pathway for warm waters to enter the sub-iceshelf cavity. The model shows a southward inflow of Warm Deep Water over this sill and into the cavity, producing a mean cavity temperature close to 1.0 C. This leads to high levels of basal melting (>10 m/a) at the grounding line of Jutulstraumen and an average melting over the ice shelf base close to 1.9 m/a. The southward inflow is a compensating flow caused by the northward outflow of fresh, cold water produced by the basal melting. Results on inflow and melting are difficult to validate since no in situ measurements yet exist in the cavity. If such high melt rates are realistic, the mass balance of Fimbulisen must be significantly negative, and the ice shelves along Dronning Maud Land must contribute about 4.4 mSv of melt water to the Weddell Sea, about 15% of the total Antarctic meltwater input to the Southern Ocean.

Measurements under Fimbulisen Using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Antarctic ice shelves are the floating extensions of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, covering around 40% of the continental shelf. The cavities beneath the ice shelves are important to the climate system through their contribution to the production of the globally important Antarctic Bottom Water. However, they remain some of the most difficult areas of the world ocean to access. Many of the processes...

Antarctic ocean and sea ice response to ozone depletion : a two 1 timescale problem

6 The response of the Southern Ocean to a repeating seasonal cycle of ozone loss is studied 7 in two coupled climate models and found to comprise both fast and slow processes. The 8 fast response is similar to the inter-annual signature of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) 9 on Sea Surface Temperature (SST), on to which the ozone-hole forcing projects in the sum10 mer. It comprises enhanced north...

Ice-sheet response to oceanic forcing.

The ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are losing ice at accelerating rates, much of which is a response to oceanic forcing, especially of the floating ice shelves. Recent observations establish a clear correspondence between the increased delivery of oceanic heat to the ice-sheet margin and increased ice loss. In Antarctica, most of these processes are reasonably well understood but have n...

GOCE’s view below the ice of Antarctica: Satellite gravimetry confirms improvements in Bedmap2 bedrock knowledge

Accurate knowledge of Antarctica’s topography, bedrock, and ice sheet thickness is pivotal for climate change and geoscience research. Building on recent significant progress made in satellite gravity mapping with European Space Agency’s Gravity field and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission, we here reverse the widely used approach of validating satellite gravity with topography and inste...

Energetic Plasticity Underlies a Variable Response to Ocean Acidification in the Pteropod, Limacina helicina antarctica

Ocean acidification, caused by elevated seawater carbon dioxide levels, may have a deleterious impact on energetic processes in animals. Here we show that high PCO(2) can suppress metabolism, measured as oxygen consumption, in the pteropod, L. helicina forma antarctica, by ∼20%. The rates measured at 180-380 µatm (MO(2)  =  1.25 M(-0.25), p  =  0.007) were significantly higher (ANCOVA, p  =  0....
